Club Statement- SRU Gender Participation Policy Review

Club Statement- SRU Gender Participation Policy Review

Erin Davie25 Jan 2023 - 19:28

Our door is always open.

Dundee Rugby Club aims to support our values of growing inclusive rugby and achieving equality, diversity and personal development in sport. We are deeply committed to inclusivity and respect across all our members. The club respects the rights, dignity and worth of every person and will treat everyone equally, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, ethnicity, religious belief, sexuality, political or social/economic status - on and off the pitch. Dundee Rugby Club are one of many who are passionate about eliminating homophobia & transphobia in rugby through community outreach & competitive play.

We are deeply saddened by the decision of our governing body, and we meet these opinions with unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community. We embody the values of Rugby for All, International Gay Rugby and LEAP Sports Scotland in supporting our club members, and join them and many other clubs in condemning the SRU’s recent decision to ban transgender women from playing contact rugby in Scotland. The decision to continue to allow transgender men to participate in contact rugby is positive, and we are happy for the transgender male community in this regard. That being said, the additional procedures now in place for trans men are a barrier to improving inclusion, equality, and participation in our sport. Our disappointment in the SRU's decision cannot be overstated.

Your identity as an athlete should never have to be separated from your identity as a trans person. Trans and non-binary players are, and will always be, welcome at Dundee Rugby Club. Our door is open. You are valued, and we are happy to have you here- as a player who trains with us, coming along to ‘Tartan Touch’, or even if you wish to coach or volunteer with us. We look forward to future SRU reviews on this policy in light of relevant ongoing scientific research and data.
