On Sunday our junior Valkyries travelled over to Bannockburn to take part in a Scottish Rugby run Evolution festival. Leaving Alloway Place at 8:30, all 17 girls bundled into the bus, sporting their distinctive Junior Valkyries hoodies and their new Valkyries sliders. In attendance, alongside Dundee, was Alloa, Bannockburn, Strathendrick, McLaren, Glenrothes, Kelpies, Dunfermline, Strathmore, Stirling County, Howe of Fife and Perthshire.
Our under 14s played a round robin festival coming up firstly against Bannockburn and Alloa, then facing Stirling county’s red team. In both of these matches the girls stuck together and showed their energy in and around the breakdown creating quick play with offloads and pops from the ground. Dundee went on to play an amalgamation of Perthshire, Strathmore, Howe of Fife and Madras. A difficult and very physical pairing however both sides played some fantastic rugby identifying the space and creating overlaps. The penultimate match was against a mixture of Kelpies and McLaren in which Dundee welcomed a Dunfermline player into their squad with open arms. The aim of this game was to focus on keeping a strong defensive line which they did well. To end the day, Dundee took to pitch 3 to play the Stirling County white team, some sore bodies were beginning to show by this point however their enthusiasm and determination to face a tough side overpowered and they ended on a high.
Our under 16s combined with Kelpies to play some full field rugby. Playing Stirling and then Dunfermline and Glenrothes they combined effectively with the well oiled machine which is the Kelpies. They showed their worth in and amongst open play making some fantastic dominant tackles and running lines. Fit with matching nose tape our girls let off some steam from the stress of prelims.
Colin Sangster, director of Dundee Rugby and coach for the day said “despite being a small team physically the girls made some amazing tackles and showed off their skills. Of course there are work ons but overall a positive day for the girls”.
Thank you to all the great supporters on the side line who kept our spectators and players company in the form of puppies.
If you would believe it the bus home was quite a quiet one filled with lots of tired and muddy girls.
A nice break for the girls over the next few weeks as Easter rolls around. Our next focus is the festival held at our very own Alloway Place home on the 16th of April. Keep your eyes pealed for more information.
