Interview with the 1st XV Men's Coach

How’s the off season been?

Yeah it's been good. Took a month off spent time with my boys and kept away from anything rugby related. Then played a bit of tartan touch with my eldest to keep active.

How’s recruitment going and what was the team needing to improve?

Recruitment has been going well and my aim really is to get all the best players in the area around 40/50 miles to come and play for Dundee rugby and try and get our club back up in the premiership where it belongs. We are pretty sorted as a team but we are young team and we aren’t the biggest lads in the league. So the main goal was to get some size and experience on board in the off season, So we can win the tight ones we lost out on last season and I think we have done that.

Please keep a eye on the social media pages over the next couple of weeks we have some new player announcements.

How are you and Colin Sangster managing considering he was coaching the club for many years?

We get on great he backs me 100%. Me and Hammy are right behind him as well he’s doing a great job in all section of the club we are now seeing improvements in results from kids, women’s, men’s all on the same weekend.

In fact we had a weekend when all the kids teams won and both men and women’s sides won so that was pretty special! I think it was something like 11 sides winning.
Also for those that don’t know Colin has moved up to director of rugby at the club but he does a power of work he goes above and beyond really.

What’s the aim for the 1st XV Men?

1st, we really came on massively last year went from boys to men in the 2nd half of the season and the way it worked if we got another 10 points which we let slip at Kelso and Highland away losing by a point or two each time we could of got top 4, That really would of been a position I’d of been happy with but where we ended up and beating some massive club names including Melrose, Kelso, Watson's, Broughmuir etc. it’s a good way to start building blocks for the season ahead.
The big thing for me was I was keen to get the culture right on the field and around the club so that’s positive happy environment and always learning each session but pushing each other on to be the best we can be! Personally I feel we aren’t far off the top 4 sides and it was pleasing to hear other coaches saying the same but it’s not that until we get up there.

How’s the merging going?

It’s done! It’s not talked about any more we are one club, all 4 senior teams under the Dundee rugby banner and it’s been a massive success the 2nd XV guys are brilliant all committed and won 18 games out of 18 which is massive they have two good coaches in Ross and Micheal they do a great job. The women’s 1st XV won their league & they have started a 2nd XV team, training with 40/50 woman and put out two sides most weekend so yeah big success and hopefully more to come I think.

What would you say to any players looking to join but aren’t sure?

I’d say come along and do a few session and see what you think you can always go back to your current club! we offer good coaching and try to give little details to the players to help them improve and we always do our stuff under pressure weather it be conditioning games, passing, shape it’s a good learning environment. The way that me and hammy see it is the earlier you move to us the more we see of you and get a chance to work with you to develop.

Lastly, Anything else you’d like to add?

Yeah I’d like to thank all the supporters who follow us every week and back us at mayfield it’s been good to see the buzz around the club on game days and people enjoying them self it’s all part of the Culture and progress of a improving club.
